How Sweet It Is [26 Feb 2009|10:34am]
HOW sweet it is, when mother Fancy rocks
The wayward brain, to saunter through a wood!
An old place, full of many a lovely brood,
Tall trees, green arbours, and ground-flowers in flocks;
And wild rose tip-toe upon hawthorn stocks,
Like a bold Girl, who plays her agile pranks
At Wakes and Fairs with wandering Mountebanks,--
When she stands cresting the Clown's head, and mocks
The crowd beneath her. Verily I think,
Such place to me is sometimes like a dream
Or map of the whole world: thoughts, link by link,
Enter through ears and eyesight, with such gleam
Of all things, that at last in fear I shrink,
And leap at once from the delicious stream.

-William Wordsworth, 1806

I am out of sorts today, a mood which led me to Bartleby to find this.

Since no one else has mentioned it... [05 Dec 2008|09:43am]
Bars in DC to be OPEN UNTIL 5 AM from January 17-20 for the inauguration.

Obama is the gift that just keeps on giving (you hear about him giving the pink slip to Bush's political ambassadorships?). DC is going to be a madhouse for those days. A friend who works at a place on Capitol Hill says that they are planning to earn practically their whole Q1 profit on the inauguration.

America doesn't throw enough big ass parties like this. I am so excited.

Thanksgiving Eve [26 Nov 2008|11:39am]
My buddies Vasudeva are playing Town Hall in College Park tonight. There's a shit ton of talent in this band. I am not sure how to describe their sound, but I liken it Phish in the way they meander in their jams, but they do insane counterpoint with their melodies.

People should go! I'm going to go! Tonight at 10:30!

I accidentally the cumin instead of the cinnamon on my toast.

Edit: It wasn't bad! Then again, I like cumin. I'm glad I realized my mistake before I bit into it. My reaction might have been different otherwise.

Where the lemonade springs and the bluebird sings [23 Sep 2008|11:54pm]
I think I have figured it out: I was a hobo in a previous life. I have this weird affinity for the seedier side of society, for booze, for banjos. When I first learned an instrument, a song I played earlier on was "Big Rock Candy Mountain." I remember practicing it over and over. Though I played recorder, the lesson book had the words. No cigarette tress in this version, sycamore trees instead.

I have hobo teeth. I'm obsessing over my teeth lately. If I didn't have this overbite I wouldn't look so weird when I smile. Oh, sometimes I pretend the gap in my front teeth is "Madonna-esque," but really I know it screams hobo. And the sound echoes in the railyard... And if I did somehow rationalize getting braces and shit (at this age!) would changing the shape of my mouth affect my clarinet playing? Would I never be able to play again?

And, check this out: Hobo → Momo. Practically the same thing. My brother and sister named me. I don't think it was mere coincidence that they named me Maureen.

Shit, I might just now have to be a hobo for Halloween... a sexy hobo.

In which her gaming tendencies are revealed [10 Sep 2008|01:09pm]
Among the perks of my new job working for Automata Studios is that immersing myself in geekery is practically a requirement. So I've been gaming some. more.

I started FFX (uh, Final Fantasy 10) on a whim a few months ago. I have not played religiously, and I'm 61 hours into it and I believe I might finish the damn thing soon. I wouldn't characterize myself as being into role-playing games so much, but I really got into stat tweaking and what not. I liked it enough that I picked up FFXII, but I promised myself that I wouldn't start that until I finish FFX. I might not hold myself to that in the future.

I really don't know why I kept playing. The twists were either ludicrous or obvious, and a lot of plot elements make no sense at all. None of that matters to me when my meatwad can now consistently do 9999 damage against most monsters.

I had heard good things about Shadow of the Colossus, so I went to Amazon to order it. I never actually played Ico (also by the same company as Shadows), but both Maggie and I enjoyed watching Andy play it, so fun for the whole family, there. I talked myself into buying a copy of Kingdom Hearts because I figured that since Maggie likes to watch me play FF, she would like to watch the disneyfied FF. Maggie even mentioned wanting to be Yuna for Halloween. We'll see.

Also: One in two 7-11 patrons owns a gaming console.

Video games are teaching our children the scientific method.

Tonight I have a meeting with Destiny...

My little brother's little girl, Destiny Leah, born on September 4. She was 7 lbs, 14 oz, just like her cousin Maggie!

Why are there ads for the coast guard airing during Saturday morning cartoons? I know we're watching Fox, but come on now.

(We watch Fox because Maggie likes Sonic X and the Winks.)

Cougar Update [04 Aug 2008|01:09pm]
As reported elsewhere in ljland, it turns out it wasn't a cougar.

Too funny that they didn't ask, say, SOMEONE IN ZOOLOGY what kind of animal it is.

Have any of you all ever been out and run into someone that you remember that you had a reason to dislike but have forgotten the precise reason? But yet you feel the reason is entirely valid even if you don't recall exactly how so? How do you handle that? For the purposes of this question imagine you encounter this person publically, i.e., a party or club.
